Malcolm Worby

Malcolm Worby studied at Bristol Polytechnic in the UK and has had his own award-winning architectural design firm for over 25 years specialising in natural, sustainable, and environmentally-friendly buildings. This includes passive and active solar heating and cooling, photovoltaic, wind turbines, grey water recycling, composting toilet systems, and rainwater harvesting. He has designed buildings in various parts of the world including throughout the USA, UK, South Africa, Mexico, and the Netherlands, and has worked on low income natural building projects in South Africa, Malawi, and the USA.

Malcolm Worby Designs was established in 1980 and specialised in designing innovative custom houses and buildings with an emphasis on using natural, environmentally friendly and sustainable materials, products and technology wherever possible. In 2003 Malcolm Worby Designs became a natural and sustainable building and energy consultancy firm working with architects, developers, builders, NGO’s, and individuals to design more sustainable, environmentally friendly, low carbon, and energy efficient buildings.

As part of his desire to help others less fortunate in the world help themselves, Malcolm founded the "Homeless And Poor People's Initiative" (HAPPI) in 2006. HAPPI is a Non Profit Organisation that advises, teaches, and trains poor and homeless people and communities in underdeveloped countries throughout the world the necessary skills to build affordable, natural, environmentally friendly, and energy efficient homes and community buildings for themselves, using locally available natural and sustainable materials. The skills and knowledge learnt by the previously unemployed and unemployable people trained by HAPPI enable them to be able to work within their communities and those in the surrounding area.

Malcolm lives near Stellenbosch, South Africa.
