Better Places: Creating Successful Neighbourhoods Chris Boyes & Cathy McMahon, Somer Housing Group

As more and more organisations are proving, focusing on neighbourhoods makes sense. There are numerous examples of innovative projects that have turned round failing neighbourhoods and given new hope for the future. This workshop will examine how to move beyond individual projects to successful neighbourhood-level management and investment. Such an approach holds out the prospect of mainstreaming neighbourhood sustainability as a key driver for organisational development. Creating successful neighbourhoods requires a new understanding of our neighbourhoods, effective engagement with residents to identify priorities and deliver solutions, the development of the necessary investment “tools” and, for staff, the appreciation that neighbourhood-level working is not an extra but the “day job”. The workshop will provide details of how Somer’s Better Places programme is addressing these challenges and will also give an opportunity for others to share from their own experience so that we can learn together.
